How to paste a flag emoji on any device

  • Android: tap a flag above, open your chat or post, long-press the text box and tap Paste. On Gboard you can also tap the clipboard icon.
  • iPhone and iPad: tap a flag, then tap once in the text box (or long-press) and choose Paste.
  • Windows: click a flag, then press Ctrl+V. The Windows emoji panel (Windows key + period) has no country flags, so copying from this page is the easy way.
  • Mac: click a flag, then press Command+V. You can also open the emoji viewer with Control+Command+Space and search for “flag”.

How flag emoji work

A flag emoji is not a picture. It is two special regional indicator letters that spell a country’s two-letter ISO code, and your phone draws them as a flag. 🇮 + 🇳 make 🇮🇳 India, 🇵 + 🇰 make 🇵🇰 Pakistan and 🇹 + 🇷 make 🇹🇷 Turkey. Because the letters always travel together, one tap copies the whole flag. England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 work differently: they are a black flag followed by hidden tag characters.

How do I copy and paste a flag emoji?

Tap any flag in the picker and it is copied instantly. Then open WhatsApp, Instagram or any other app, long-press the text box and tap Paste. On a computer, press Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on a Mac.

Why do flags show as letters like IN or PK on Windows?

Windows doesn’t include flag emoji in its emoji font, so it shows the two regional indicator letters instead, such as IN for India or PK for Pakistan. Nothing is broken: the copied flag still appears as a real flag when you paste it on a phone, in WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook, or on a Mac.

How do I copy several flags at once?

Switch the picker to Pick several, tap each flag you want, then press Copy all. Tick spaces if you want a space between the flags.

How are flag emoji made?

Each country flag is two regional indicator letters that spell the country’s two-letter ISO code. I + N becomes 🇮🇳 India, and B + R becomes 🇧🇷 Brazil. The England, Scotland and Wales flags use a longer tag sequence.

How many flag emoji are there?

Unicode Emoji 18.0 has 270 flag emoji: 259 country and territory flags (including the European Union and United Nations), 3 UK nation flags for England, Scotland and Wales, and 8 other flags such as the rainbow, pirate and chequered flags.

Why does a flag show as a blank box or two letters on my phone?

Some flags are newer than your phone’s emoji set. The Sark flag 🇨🇶, for example, was added in 2024. Updating your phone’s software usually fixes it.
